amfori BSCI

Business Social Compliance Initiative for ethical trade

amfori BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) is an international scheme for monitoring and improving labor and human rights in global supply chains. Run by amfori (formerly the Foreign Trade Association), it has over 2,400 retailer, importer, and brand members.

The BSCI Code of Conduct covers 13 principles aligned with international labor and human rights frameworks: 1. The Right of Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining. 2. Fair Remuneration. 3. Occupational Health and Safety. 4. Special Protection for Young Workers. 5. No Bonded Labor. 6. Ethical Business Behavior. 7. No Discrimination. 8. Decent Working Hours. 9. No Child Labor. 10. No Precarious Employment. 11. Protection of the Environment. 12. (Plus underlying expectations on freedom from harassment and access to remedy.)

BSCI audits are conducted by approved firms and result in scoring (A, B, C, D, E) with corrective action plans for non-conformities.

For Egyptian food and agricultural suppliers (especially those serving German retail chains), BSCI is widely accepted alongside or instead of SMETA. BSCI is particularly common for ALDI, LIDL, METRO, REWE, Edeka, Carrefour suppliers.

FoodGate Audit conducts BSCI pre-audits and gap analyses, supporting Egyptian facilities in preparing for formal BSCI certification.
