Poland Buys 73% of Its Frozen Strawberries From Egypt

Poland took 62,200 tonnes of Egyptian frozen strawberries in 2025, 73.6 percent of everything it imported in that category, which makes it the most concentrated product and country pair in Egypt's produce trade. The same product carries the most concentrated residue record in the EU alert data: 50 of the 527 RASFF notifications on Egyptian fruit, vegetables and herbs concern strawberries, and 24 of those 50 flag oxamyl as an unauthorised substance. Oxamyl has no EU approval and its limit on strawberries is the 0.001 mg/kg default, so a detection is a finding rather than a margin call. For a Polish processor, choosing the supplier and controlling the residue are one decision, not two.

How the 24 is counted, since a substance count published without its definition invites a future contradiction: oxamyl is named in 25 of the 50 hazard fields, and in 24 of those it carries the wording "unauthorised substance". That gap is a labelling difference inside one column, not a disagreement about what was found. The stricter count of 24 is the one this site uses.

Where the sample has to be taken

Freezing is a preservation step. Nothing on an IQF line is designed to remove a residue, so a delivery that passes intake carries its problem through freezing, grading and packing, and comes out inside a production lot far larger than the delivery that caused it.

An independent pre-shipment inspection at the freezing facility draws representative samples from raw fruit intake for accredited laboratory analysis, verifies the grower declarations behind each delivery, checks the frozen product for clumping, under frozen cores and foreign matter, and confirms holding temperature before the container is sealed. Pro Tip: put the sampling point in the contract, not in the inspection order. Slovenia logs a large share of Egyptian alerts because Koper is an entry port, not because Slovenian buyers are especially exposed. Strawberries break that pattern. Poland issued 11 of the 50 strawberry notifications, ahead of Germany, Belgium and Slovenia at 8 each, and oxamyl is named in 7 of Poland's 11. Poland is the largest buyer and the most frequent notifier on the same product, which means Polish laboratories are finding these residues in fruit Polish processors had already bought.

For a Polish buyer that record is not a warning about somebody else's lane. It describes this one, and it was produced by the laboratories that will look at the next container.

What the 20 percent rate does to a schedule

Strawberries from Egypt, fresh, chilled or frozen, are listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 for pesticide residues at a 20 percent identity and physical check rate. One consignment in five is held for physical examination and sampling. The annexes are revised roughly twice a year, so the rate in force when a contract is signed is worth confirming rather than assuming.

The cost of a held container is rarely the laboratory fee. Washing, blanching, freezing, grading and packing are there to preserve and to sort, so a residue present at intake cannot be assumed to have gone by the time the block is packed. The control has to sit before the fruit enters the line, not after.

Which substances should a Polish buyer put in the laboratory scope?
