Slovenia, Egyptian oranges: 44 RASFF notifications since 2019
Slovenia is the EU country that flags Egyptian citrus most often: 44 of the 183 RASFF notifications on Egyptian citrus between November 2019 and September 2026 (24%), every one of them on oranges, and 37 of them border rejections, where the lot never entered the EU. The latest dates from July 2026.
The calendar above says the orange season opens in November. The notifications say the risk sits at the other end: 22 of Slovenia's 44 fall in March, April and May, only 4 in November and December. Across all EU countries the pattern is the same, 96 of 183 citrus notifications (52%) in March to May against 6 in November and December, and 43 more from June to October, after the main window closes.
The substances behind Slovenia's notifications are old organophosphates: chlorpyrifos in 23 notifications, dimethoate in 8. Neither is approved in the EU any more, so their residue limits leave very little room. When is each Egyptian fruit and vegetable in season for export?
Egyptian produce ships year-round. Citrus runs November to May, fresh strawberries November to March with frozen available year-round, table grapes May to July, mangoes July to October, pomegranates August to November, and onions and potatoes in overlapping spring and summer windows. Quality peaks early in each window, so buy early and have every shipment inspected at origin before it leaves.
When is the Egyptian orange season?
Egyptian citrus runs roughly from November to May: Navel oranges open the season, Valencia carries it through spring, alongside mandarins, lemons and grapefruit. Peak volumes ship December to April.
When are Egyptian strawberries available?
Fresh Egyptian strawberries ship from roughly November to March, filling the European winter window. Frozen IQF strawberries are packed and exported year-round.
When is the Egyptian grape season?
Egyptian table grapes ship in a short early-season window from roughly May to July, ahead of the Spanish and Italian peaks, starting with Early Sweet and finishing with Crimson Seedless.
Why do import programs from Egypt need inspection at origin?
Season windows are short and demand is concentrated, so a rejected or downgraded container is hard to replace in time. An independent ISO 17020 inspection at the packhouse verifies grade, maturity, cold chain and residue risk before the goods ship, when problems can still be fixed.
