Egypt's citrus season opens in October with early Navel oranges and runs through May on Valencia, the two varieties that make Egypt one of the world's largest orange exporters. This pre-season watchlist gives EU, UK and Gulf buyers the verified risk picture before the first containers load. Citrus is the most-scrutinised Egyptian category there is, the single most-notified commodity on the EU border record, and the one crop from Egypt still subject to increased official controls. But the risk is not random: it concentrates in a handful of known substances, it is fully detectable before shipment, and the trend is improving. Every figure below comes from the public EU RASFF record and the official EU Pesticides Database, extracted August 2026.
The record: the most-notified category, and one of the fastest-improving
Egyptian citrus (oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruit) accounts for 182 of the 527 EU RASFF notifications on Egyptian fruit, vegetables and herbs since late 2019, about 35%, the largest single category. That headline is exactly why it needs a watchlist, but the direction of travel matters as much as the total. Citrus notifications ran at 39 a year in 2021 and again in 2023; over the last twelve months (to July 2026) the count is 25, down from 29 the year before, roughly a 14% year-on-year improvement and well below the peak. On the flagship export, the record is getting cleaner, not worse.

The 10% border check: what increased controls mean for your container
Unlike most Egyptian crops, oranges from Egypt are listed for increased official controls under Regulation 2019/1793 (annexes replaced by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1206, in force 30 June 2026). The identity-and-physical check frequency is 10% as of August 2026, reduced from 20%, a direct reflection of the improving record. In practice that means one container in ten is pulled for documentary, identity and physical checks at the EU border, with laboratory residue testing on a share of those. A failed check does not just stop one pallet: it can trigger reinforced checks on the whole supplier flow. The commercial logic is simple: a residue failure caught at your own packhouse costs a re-test; the same failure caught at Rotterdam costs the container.
Three substances explain most of it
The risk on Egyptian citrus is remarkably concentrated. Three substances appear in the large majority of all notifications, and every one of them is not approved in the EU, so the tolerance is the 0.01 mg/kg default, effectively zero. Chlorpyrifos alone appears in 86 of the 182 citrus notifications, 47% of them, followed by the organophosphate dimethoate. Both were banned in the EU in 2020-2021 and carry zero tolerance. Where citrus fails, and the one non-obvious risk
Two of the three lead substances are field insecticides: the fix is grower discipline and a clean pre-harvest interval, verifiable from the spray diary of the specific groves. The third, chlorpropham, is the tell-tale one. It is a sprout suppressant used on potatoes and onions, not on citrus: its recurring presence on oranges is generally a cross-contamination signal, from shared cold stores or re-used crates that previously held treated produce. If your oranges show chlorpropham, the problem is usually in storage and logistics, not the grove, and the corrective action is different. Imazalil, by contrast, is a legal post-harvest fungicide with a 4.0 mg/kg MRL; the four exceedances on record are dosing failures at the packhouse drencher, not banned-substance use, controllable with calibration and a verified dip concentration.

Season timing and market context
- October-January: early and mid-season Navel oranges, the export flagship into the EU, UK, Gulf and Asia; deep colour, seedless, the volume that builds Egypt's reputation.
- February-May: Valencia, the late, juice-rich variety that carries the back half of the season; Baladi and Murcott mandarins run alongside.

Chlorpropham is a sprout suppressant for potatoes and onions, not a citrus treatment. When it turns up on oranges it usually indicates cross-contamination in shared cold storage or re-used packaging, rather than a spray applied to the fruit. It is worth testing for precisely because the source, and the fix, sit in storage and logistics rather than the grove.
