ISO 22000
International standard for food safety management systems
ISO 22000 is the international standard for food safety management systems (FSMS). Published in 2005 and revised in 2018, it integrates HACCP principles with the ISO Management System framework (similar structure to ISO 9001).
Unlike retailer-driven standards (BRCGS, IFS), ISO 22000 is sector-neutral and applies to any organization in the food chain (producers, processors, packagers, transporters, retailers, services). It does not include detailed prerequisite programs—those are defined in ISO/TS 22002 series and form the basis of FSSC 22000.
ISO 22000 is internationally recognized but rarely required as a standalone for retail supply chains. It is more common in B2B food ingredient and food service sectors. Many Egyptian food businesses pursue ISO 22000 as a foundation, then upgrade to FSSC 22000 for retail acceptance.
FoodGate Audit can verify ISO 22000 compliance during facility audits, identifying gaps and CAPA effectiveness in your FSMS.
